Excitement builds for south east motorbike crop trials tour

WA’s annual motorbike crop trials tour has become a marked fixture on the calendar for many of the industry’s motorbike enthusiasts and this year it heads to one of the State’s most popular regions.

The ADAMA 2-Wheel Trial Tour will involve a longer format this season, from September 10-13 in the south-eastern agricultural region around Esperance, allowing participants to travel and gather in the area on the first day of the event before two full days of riding and three nights.

Market Development Manager with ADAMA Australia in WA, Bevan Addison, who coordinates the tours and enjoys hitting the trails on his own ‘steed’, said the event would traverse the entire Esperance area to take in the diversity of the region.

“There are four distinct areas around Esperance. There are the coastal high rainfall areas with lighter soil types and the drier northern areas, which tend to be heavier soils. Each of the areas have different cropping systems, opportunities and challenges. We will be heading west, north and east of Esperance and will cover the high rainfall western areas and lower rainfall medium and heavy country, through to the higher rainfall sandplain areas to the east,” Bevan said.

“This will highlight the different rainfall zones, soils and farm production systems throughout the region.”

In addition to picturesque bike trails, he said the tour would explore some of ADAMA Australia’s local weed and disease control research, as well as trials being coordinated by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and latest crop variety trials.

“It will be a range of cropping trials that offers a very broad interest to participants,” Bevan said.

Importantly, it will also feature farming operations and some unique practices in the area, including drainage works and rehabilitation of land previously under tree production, as well as trends with grain legume production.

The fully catered riding and camping tour, complete with support vehicles, has continued to attract upwards of 40 motorbike riders and there is some excitement around it being held in the south-eastern zone this season.

“Some riders are looking to turn it into a week-long extravaganza and holiday, making their way down to the region via various bike trails,” Bevan said.

He said each tour had delivered a different perspective, and this would be emphasised again in the south this year after being held in the north last season, and feedback from the tours had always been highly positive.

“It has mostly centred around the great camaraderie the tours develop and the ability they provide for like-minded people across the State to come together and share information and ideas.”

Riders interested in joining the tour to head to the popular south-eastern region this year have been urged to register for the event as soon as possible, as tour numbers will once again be limited. A swag or tent, towel and toiletries are all that’s required to hit the trails, plus a fully insured ride of choice.
